The Benefits of a Memory Foam Mattress
Getting a good night’s sleep is a problem for many people. No matter how much you toss and turn, you just can’t find a comfortable position. The mattress that you are sleeping on may be the problem. Mattresses made with coils and springs tend to poke through and give your body an uneven support. A memory foam mattress conforms to your body and provides you with just the right amount of support in all the right places. (more…)
Tempur-Pedic – Was it Really Developed by NASA?
You may have heard the claim more then a few times before. Swedish mattress giant TempurPedic claims that its patented memory foam mattress was developed and endorsed by NASA. Well if you didn’t believe it, they are right. NASA developed the material as part of a space experiment that was designed to ease the pressure of g-force, and Tempur-Pedic began to look into its benefits.
After much research and testing, the Tempur material was born and from there a whole host of new beds from the line. Although the Tempurpedic mattress range was the first to bring memory foam mattresses to the main stream, many other companies have caught on in recent years and so that has led to much debate as to which is the best. At BedsForHome.com we review and compare many types of mattresses, including memory foam. Check out our mattress reviews for more details.
Price is not everything when buying a mattress
When buying a mattress, you might be tempted to pick one up just because its a little cheaper or it’s more expensive than the rest. This is a bad premise as mattress quality is not always determined by price. Some of the worst mattresses on the market might just happen to be overpriced. For this reason, it’s better to take note of mattress reviews and ratings, and deciding on the type of mattress you want, before spending any money.
Shopping around for a mattress will suggest all sorts of brands, types, and mattress sizes to choose from, costing anything from a hundred dollars all the way up to several thousand for one of the best Tempurpedic mattress models. You’re more than likely going to sleep on this mattress night after night for years to come so it’s well worth doing your research before making the right choice (hopefully!), because three months from now you don’t want to find out you have made a costly mistake. So remember to pay attention to more then just the price tag when shopping around.
How often should you change your mattress?
This is a question many people ask. There are a lot of variables to consider but as a general rule of thumb most mattresses might need to be changed every 3-5 years. Especially for cheap mattresses where you can expect to change them during their third or forth year. For higher end mattresses you can expect to use them for many years longer, especially for some of the top of the range memory foam mattress models, like the Tempurpedic mattress range.
Generally you will be able to tell that your mattress needs changing by examining it. If you notice odd formations of springs or the spring feel creaky and old, it is about time you start looking for a new one. Also, the corners of the mattress may sag or there may be a dip where you or your partner have been lying. If you don’t feel the need to go the extent of buying a new mattress, then something like a memory foam mattress topper might be ideal.
Three things to ask yourself before buying a new bed
A mattress can often be a leading factor in losing sleep throughout the night, although there can be other causes too. There are some ways to determine whether it’s the mattress that is the problem or something else that is causing the sleepless nights.
- Do you have trouble falling asleep? Usually if the mattress is the problem, you will fall asleep but wake up in the morning with back or side aches. However if you lay awake for hours before finally falling sleep, you might want to check out other culprits.
- Do you toss and turn at night? Generally this is a sign of nothing more then a bad mattress or bad back (often as a result of a bad mattress). Either way a replacement mattress such as a memory foam mattress or Sleep Number bed could help with this. Some of the best beds and mattresses can do wonders for your health.
- Is your mattress old? Many of the times, the older the mattress gets, the weaker and more shaky the springs get. This causes them to shift and cause pressure points that can be very uncomfortable. If your mattress is over 5 years old this could be a problem and is worth looking into a bit further, to find out whether this is in fact the cause.
Deciding on a Memory Foam Mattress Foundation
Deciding on the foundation of your bed is sometimes just as important as the actual mattress itself. They provide support and also absorb the pressure put down on the mattress, ultimately extending the life of the springs, and in turn, the mattress itself.
With a memory foam mattress however, the visco elastic material is what provides the support and what also acts as the shock absorber. For this reason, the foundation is not really a necessary component. The only reason you will probably want some kind of foundation is so that you’re not lying too close to the floor.
What you should remember is that the memory foam should shape to the contour of the body, and not to the foundation. The main aim of using a memory foam bed is pressure relief and restful sleep. Let the quality of the mattress have full effect by eliminating the use of box-spring foundations.
If you buy one of the top Tempurpedic mattress models (or any other recommended brand), the benefits are certainly there when compared to other types of mattresses. The initial investment can be quite high, so it’s important that you’re making the most of it by combining the mattress with the right type of foundation.
