The memory foam mattress was first developed by the space program in the United States to find a way to conform to the body of astronauts while providing protection from G forces. The material that was designed by NASA is viscoelastic, which means that it bounces back from pressure and forms around whatever puts pressure on it. The material eventually made its way to the consumer market and has been used in mattresses since.
The memory foam mattress avoids pressure points on the body and gives sleepers the support that they need during sleep. The pressure is taken off the body and conforms to the curves and shape of the body. Once pressure is removed from the mattress, it returns to its original shape.
Tempurpedic is the biggest name in memory foam mattresses and has been around since the seventies. There has been a tremendous growth of memory foam mattress companies since that time producing comfortable mattresses for consumers. The material provides users with comfort and relief from some of the aches and pains that are common after sleeping on a traditional innerspring mattress.
There are varying grades of memory foam mattress from the different manufacturers that produce them. Not every memory foam mattress is as high quality as a Tempurpedic mattress. Consumers should learn the various grades of memory foam to find the best quality at a good price.
